We present our Mini Expedition to Mitre Peninsula, designed for all those who dream of setting foot on the LAST CONFINES OF THE EARTH. In just 3 days we complete a journey through all kinds of geographies and the unforgettable experience of knowing the gateway to the Mitre Peninsula and the historic Cabo San Pio Lighthouse.

Enjoy the wildlife of the place; dolphins, sea lions, hopefully whales and a great diversity of birds. Find vestiges of history; abandoned ranch posts. This expedition is designed for people with previous experience in multi-day trekking.

Cape San Pío’s Tour Details

Time: 3 Days

Experience: Level 1
No technical equipment is required.

Physical Experience: Level 3
Moderate elevation gain and long distances. Hike and practice a sport. Basic experience.

What is the tour itinerary?

Day 1: Moat to Casa Vieja

  • The expedition begins at the end of route J, at the Moat estancia.
  • On this first day, we will hike along the coast, through forests and grasslands, always next to the Beagle Channel, which opens up towards the Atlantic.
  • After two hours of walking, we will ford the Chico River.
  • We will camp where the Puerto Rancho estancia once stood, next to a ranch known as Casa Vieja.
  • We will set up our tents on the grassland.

Distance: 16 km (10 miles) Elevation gain/loss: +170 m / -170 m (558 ft / -558 ft)

Day 2: Casa Vieja – Cabo San Pio – Mesita

  • We will ascend through grasslands to a high trail, from where we will have a view of Cape San Pio and its lighthouse. This point represents the southernmost tip of the Argentine Republic.
  • We will approach the lighthouse to enjoy the view of the cliffs at the foot of which a colony of sea lions can be heard.
  • In the afternoon, we will return to our campsite, pack up, and head towards «La Mesita», our campsite for the second night.

Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles) Elevation gain/loss: +410 m / -390 m (1,345 ft / -1,280 ft)

Day 3: Mesita – Moat

  • Return day to Ushuaia.
  • We will break down the camp to return to Moat at noon and to Ushuaia in the afternoon.
  • At 1:00 pm, the transfer back to the city will be waiting for us.

What equipment do I need to do this tour?

  • Hiking boots (mid-calf and NOT sneakers)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Medium backpack (50 liters or more)
  • Gloves and hat
  • Cold weather coat and a rain jacket
  • Screw-top bottle

What physical condition do you need to have?

Embark on a challenging trek to Cabo San Pío in Ushuaia, where you will face a moderate elevation gain and long distances. This adventure requires you to be used to walking and practicing a sport, as well as having basic trekking experience to fully enjoy the route. Prepare to walk through subantarctic forests, peat bogs and paradisiacal coasts, with the possibility of spotting local fauna such as wild horses and bulls, guanacos, beavers, foxes and a wide variety of birds.

  • Distance: Long (around 20 km round trip)
  • Elevation gain: Moderate (approximately 500 meters)
  • Requirements: Accustomed to walking and practicing a sport, basic trekking experience
